Why Specialized Bowel Care Matters

For many NDIS participants with neurological conditions, bowel function requires careful, consistent support. Without it, participants may experience:

Without Proper Support

  • Health complications— Faecal impaction can be painful and lead to hospitalization
  • Reduced dignity— Unmanaged bowel care affects confidence and participation
  • Medical emergencies— In SCI participants at T6 or above, bowel-related issues can trigger autonomic dysreflexia
  • Preventable hospital visits— Many admissions can be avoided with consistent care

The Good News

With our RN-led protocols and your support team's consistency, these risks are preventable.

  • RN-developed bowel management protocols
  • Consistent, dignified care routines
  • Trained support workers who understand your needs
  • Emergency protocols for AD and other risks
Critical Safety Protocol

Autonomic Dysreflexia: What You Need to Know

Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) is a serious, potentially life-threatening response that can occur in spinal cord injury (SCI) participants at T6 or above. Bowel-related triggers (impaction, bowel fullness) are among the most common causes.

Symptoms include sudden high blood pressure, headache, flushed skin, and anxiety. This is a medical emergency requiring immediate medical attention.

Our AD Safety Protocols Include:

  • AD risk identification for all applicable participants
  • Staff training on AD recognition
  • AD symptom checklist for support workers
  • Emergency response procedures
  • Medical escalation pathways
  • Post-incident RN review processes

AD Warning Signs Staff Are Trained to Recognise

  • Sudden high blood pressure
  • Pounding headache
  • Flushing or blotching above injury level
  • Sweating above injury level
  • Nasal congestion
  • Slow heart rate
